Many people consider the Stonewall Uprising in Manhattan in 1969 as a turning point for the Gay Liberation Movement in The United States. The Stonewall riots were a series of violent confrontations between police and gay rights activists, prompting gay rights marches in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco during the following year. Today, Pride month is celebrated all across the country to hold space for those members of the community who have lost their lives to hate crimes due to their sexuality and orientation and to protest an unjust system. While Pride has many celebratory events, its roots come from radical change and commemorating LGBTQ activism and culture.
This month, in addition to participating in several Pride events across the state of Colorado where SheFly is headquartered, we have chosen to amplify Wild Diversity, a nonprofit organization that aims to help create a personal connection to the outdoors for Black, Indigenous, all People of Color (BIPOC) & the LGBTQ2S+ communities, through outdoor adventures and education. Their Instagram and website offer resources to make the outdoors more accessible, personal stories from activists changing the narrative in the outdoor industry, and programs and workshops for people of all backgrounds to attend.
What is Wild Diversity:
Wild Diversity is an organization led by talented adventure guides creating a safe space for people to experience the outdoors. Their core goals include building community, providing resources, decolonizing outdoor spaces, and equipping the next generation by creating equitable access to outdoor adventures for youth of color, queer, trans, and low-income youth.
Wild Diversity Programs:
Wild Diversity has a range of events, workshops, and programs that promote representation and inclusion in the outdoors, and here are a few from their site:
Adventure Guide Development Program: Wild Diversity wants its community to have a sense of place in the outdoors, one where its participants can grow, share their experiences, and thrive. Through this program, Wild Diversity promotes representation and training guides of diverse backgrounds to ensure long-term diversity in the outdoors. And they’re recruiting now for 2022 and no experience is needed!

Wild Diversity is committed to supporting participants and their connection with the outdoors, creating a welcoming space for both novice and experienced adventurers. They have tons of gear to offer and answers to all types of questions about attendees might have for their first outdoor adventure.
